The Outer City is nearly rectangular with four city walls in the east, the south, the west and the north, and surrounded by peripheral protection trenches with perimeter of 16,813 m. The east wall, the west wall and the south wall are almost straight, but the middle part of the north wall is protruding. The east wall is 3,364 m long, the west wall is 3,402 m long, the south wall is 4,690 m long, and the north wall is 4,957 m long.
In the outer city, there are eleven gates in all, of which three are located in the south, four in the north, two in the east and the west respectively. There are eleven streets altogether, including three longitudinal streets, six horizontal streets and one street surrounding the Outer City. There are also residential areas, markets and Buddhist temples inside the city.
