Concept and Origin of UNESCO Global Geoparks

Concept of UNESCO Global Geoparks

UNESCO Global Geoparks, within the IGGP, are the mechanism of international cooperation by which areas of geoheritage of international value support each other. It aims at heritage conservation through a bottom-up approach, involving local communities, enhancing their understanding of the heritage and adopts a sustainable approach to the development of the area. Through the IGGP, these areas can apply to UNESCO, for designation as a “UNESCO Global Geopark”, drawing upon the broader mandate of the Organization.

The origin of Global Geopark

In February, 1992, UNESCO formally put forward a plan of "creating a global network of geological relics with unique geological characteristics and putting the protection of important geological environment as an indivisible part of the sustainable development strategy in all region". Meanwhile, the word “Geopark” was created.

On April 15, 1999, the Standing Committee of UNESCO held the 156th meeting and put forward the plan of constructing global geoparks.

On November 17, 2015, in the 38th assembly of UNESCO, the new IGGP of UNESCO as well as relevant charters and guidelines were officially approved. In the mean time, all global geoparks at that time participated in the plan and became UNESCO Global Geoparks. Besides, the new logo of UNESCO Global Geoparks was officially adopted.
