Forest in Crater - Jingpohu UNESCO Global Geopark

The Forest in Crater, located in the east side of Zhangguangcai Mountains, about 50 km from the Jingpo Lake, is characteristic of 12 volcanoes with a wide range of volcanic geoheritage formed by the eruptions 781,000 years B.P. to 5,140 years ago. Due to the long history and proper environment, pyroclastic material was weathered into fertile soil, and then the birds stored or dropped seeds in the rock fractures flying across the crater. The seeds sprouted after rain, and year after year, from the fractures of cliff and the dark humid bottom of the crater, the dense towering trees grew, which formed the current Forest in Crater.

Around the Forest in Crater, 12 volcanoes have been found, among which the Forest in Crater Composite Volcano is the most famous and the only area open to the public. It is the largest in scale, highest in sea level, most comprehensive in volcanic edifice, and largest in lava outflow. With a gross length of 1800 m and a gross width of 700-800 m, this strato volvano is made up of four volcanoes, No. Ⅰ, Ⅱ, Ⅲ and Ⅳ.

The lava flow effused from the crater lies among the high mountains and hills like a black “dragon”, forming a whole lava flow with length of 65 km and acreage of 187 km2. Meanwhile, it forms the rich geological relics with significant scientific values like lava tunnel, lava mound, swelling ridge, swelling dome, lava dam, lava stone stream and stone pool, lava bubble cavity and bubble hole, lava collapse, lava cascade, lava fissure, hornito, wavy lava, ropy lava, steamed-bread lava, reptile-like lava (lava toes), etc.
